Offering Dental Sealants

Most often, cavities develop on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. This is because these tooth surfaces are not smooth like other areas of the teeth. With many tiny grooves called “pits and fissures” on the surfaces of back teeth, food particles and bacteria easily becomes trapped. Even if you do a very good job of brushing, it is very difficult and even impossible to reach all the way into these dark, moist areas with a toothbrush. This allows food and bacteria to build up in these crevices, putting you at risk for developing tooth decay.

Our Manchester NH dentistry practice offers dental sealants to both children and adults. Sealants are transparent, plastic resin coatings which we can quickly and easily apply to the teeth to fill in all those little grooves where food particles and bacteria collects. By having us apply dental sealants to your back teeth, you will be less likely to experience decay on these teeth.

What Can I Expect From Treatment?

The application of a dental sealant is fast, easy, pain-free and comfortable. It requires just one visit to our office. Your Manchester dentist begins by examining the teeth to check for minimal decay. If decay is found, it will be removed. Then the dentist prepares the teeth by cleaning and drying them. A solution is then applied to the teeth, which helps roughen the surfaces so the sealing material will adhere properly. Then once the teeth are rinsed and dried again, the sealant is brushed onto the teeth in liquid form wherein it seeps into the grooves and crevices. The sealant is then allowed to harden or it is hardened using a special curing light.

Caring For Sealants

Caring for dental sealants is easy as all that’s required is to brush and floss your teeth well every day and visit us for regular checkups and cleanings. During these visits to our office, we will check the sealants for wear and tear. Dental sealants can provide protection against decay for up to 10 years. During this time, you will benefit by enjoying a significantly reduced risk for developing decay on these teeth.
